Well the weather is starting to warm up (hurray) and as much as we love summer we know this time of the year means the increase in the number of drownings. With this is mind I think it’s important just to revisit what to do in the awful situation that you find someone immersed in water….
Firstly, grab them out of the water and check if they are conscious and get them on their side. This is to clear their airway and drain out any water that may be there. Clear out any solid mater that may be in their mouth – this is usually vomit. If they are conscious, keep them on their side and call an ambulance. If they are not responsive……
OK – now it’s time to roll them on their back and check if they’re breathing…
1. If they ARE breathing, roll them back on their side (recovery position) and keep checking that they keep breathing whilst you are waiting for the ambulance
2. If they ARE NOT breathing start compressions….30 compressions then you need to give them 2 breaths. Full breaths for adults, small puffs for babies/toddlers. REMEMBER….NO HEAD TILT FOR BABIES UNDER 2.
If breathing does not return after this you need to continue CPR 30 compressions : 2 breaths…keep going….don’t stop until the ambulance arrives and the paramedics tell you to stop.
The best thing you can do for yourself and your kids is to get yourself CPR savvy…there is not a more important skill to have.

Well, this morning I did the hideous job of cleaning my oven and as I was nearly overwhelmed with fumes it made me think about poisoning and how easy it is for a child to ingest a poison. So I thought I would just do a quick blog to remind everyone of the poisons info line number which is 131 126.
PLEASE PUT THIS NUMBER INTO YOUR MOBILE PHONE……GO ON DO IT RIGHT NOW….you may not be near your kids FIRST aid info poster or a phone book when the child ingests a poison. Please try to take the container to the phone so you can tell the line exactly what the child has ingested.

I think its worth mentioning that although sometimes it feels like we should make the child (or adult) vomit, it really is not the advisable thing to do unless the poisons line has recommended it. This is because if the poison has burnt on the way down, it will burn again on the way back up.

Also please don’t give anyone anything to eat or drink if they have ingested poison, even if they are asking for a drink.

Finally, some reminders of causes of poisonings in children include medications (panadol, antihistamines, vitamins, contraceptive pill), cleaning products, alcohol, natural remedies (even though they are natural it doesn’t mean they are harmless to children), illicit drugs.

Prevention is far better than the cure so take a wander through your house and imagine you are your child and see what you can access. A friend of mine crawled through her whole house and was amazed at what she could reach.

Finally, please remember to call 000 for the ambulance if someone has had a suspected poisoning and are not completely awake, in severe pain, fitting or having trouble breathing.
