The Kids First Aid Story
How We Went From 10-Person 'At Home' Courses To 18,062+ Attendees In Six Years
Ben Fisher, Jen Douneen, Katie Fisher
We're passionate about providing parents and carers with the skills they need to respond in the event that their child encounters a medical emergency.
Kids First Aid was launched in 2007, by two sisters, Jen Douneen and Katie Fisher, and husband Ben Fisher.
Today, all of our presenters Australia-wide are trained and experienced paramedics. However, our story starts with just two - Ben and Katie Fisher.
The inspiration to launch Kids First Aid didn't happen overnight. Katie and Ben are both Intensive Care Paramedics. Over their combined 30yrs+ experience, they have attended countless emergencies which have involved children. Unfortunately numerous emergency situations they have attended, many children have failed to receive basic first aid treatment during the crucial first few minutes of an emergency.
Too often parents don't have the basic first aid knowledge to help their children. Instead, they watch and wait (often in a state of panic) for help to arrive. Seeing so many parents left helpless hit home hard for Ben and Katie, who have three children themselves.
Enter Jen Douneen, with years of experience in the marketing and advertising industry and with a rich career in community and child-focused initiatives plus also a mum of three. As a Director of Kids First Aid, Jen brought the skills Ben and Katie needed to reach parents and carers Australia-wide.
The format is simple. A one-off, 3 hour session, identifying the 10 most common emergency situations that Paramedics see, that involve children. The Kids FIRST Aid team continue to believe in the strength that Paramedics are the experts in emergency care and by integrating their own experiences, makes the session interesting, relevant, memorable & entertaining (words never previously used to describe first aid!!).
Initially Kids First Aid Paramedics would visit the homes of parents with groups of ten or more.
Today, we have a team of Kids FIRST Aid Paramedics/Presenters nationally and host regular “Open” sessions that anyone can book and attend. In addition we tailor make sessions for corporate organisations and present at their location.
The Kids First Aid team was fortunate to be recognised for their contribution to the safety of Aussie kids and has been featured in the media. Including: Kochie's Business Builders, Kerry Ann Morning Show, Sunday Life Magazine, Men's Health, 2UE, John Laws Show, Bambino Magazine, 3AW Melbourne, Northern Star, Rivertown Times and That's Life Magazine.
As years have passed, the courses have been continually updated in line with first aid protocol. The response to Kids First Aid has far exceeded Katie, Jenny and Ben's wildest expectations. Plus also received hundreds of incredible testimonials from parents who have used the skills they had learnt from our sessions. Kids First Aid now provides engaging, informative and valuable presentations across the country at a location near you.
To date, over 18,000+ parents, grandparents, friends and carer's have attended a Kids First Aid course. There are now over twenty presenters (all trained paramedics) operating Australia-wide whom we are very grateful for the amazing work they do every day.
Thank you for the overwhelming response and helping our contribution to the health and safety of Aussie children become a reality.

What attendees are saying about these invaluable first aid workshops
About an hour ago my 2 year old daughter swallowed a 5 cent
piece and wasn't able to breathe. The look on her face was terrifying. Thankfully, you helped me be prepared and know what to do. After the 5 back blows she spluttered, wretched and must've gotten the coin out of her airway as she started breathing again. It was honestly the most terrifying thing I've been through with my kids.
Thanks again for giving me the information to be able to handle the situation.
— Nancie
Last month my 11 month old daughter suffered a febrial
convulsion whilst in my arms and stopped breathing. He mouth and lips went blue & purple and she had a full convulsive fit. She had a fever that rose quickly and becuase of your course, i recognised the signs of what was happening, placed her in the recovery postion on the floor till the fit stopped and called the ambulance. Although a terrifiying experience as i was home on my home own, i kept calm and felt in control knowing i had the knowledge to help me daughter through.
I thought you should know what a difference it made to me in a emergency situation. My husband had not done the course and booked it and did it straight after, as he would not have known what to do. Thank you.
My husband and I attended your recent Woollahra course
after being very scared by a choking incident with our nine month old daughter the week before. What a great course! Alan was a wonderful presenter. He had so much great hands on experience. His stories kept things lively as well as illustrated the skills we need in a way that I'll remember. I also found it invaluable how he explained the cause of different injuries/conditions and the reason a particular treatment worked.
I've been surprised this past week how such a simple investment could make me feel more confident as a parent, but it really has.

In December I took my 12 year old daughter with me to one
of your first aid courses. This was in anticipation of her babysitting for others in the next few years.
Today it paid an unexpected dividend. As she and her 11 year old brother got off the bus and crossed the road, the young woman walking in front of them collapsed.
My 11 year old instinctively put out his hand to catch her head. My daughter moved the young woman to a safer place on the road by an island and placed her in the recovery position.
She then enlisted the help of an adult asking them to call the ambulance.

We just wanted to say a big thank you for the excellent
first aid course at Crows Nest on Saturday. We found the course was very practical and helpful and thought that Craig was a fantastic presenter. Knowing of his extensive experience and hearing his stories was great but we also found him to be very clear and good at reinforcing the main points.
Our poster is up to remind us of the things covered in the course. Hopefully we won't need to use what we've learnt but it's good to feel prepared..

I was amazed at how logical and simple so many first aid steps
for various situations are! Things have changed since learning all those complicated and confusing procedures in P.E. at high school! After realising how simple (and obviously life-changing) first aid really is I cannot help but wonder why it isn't compulsory for everyone to learn first aid! The fee is peanuts when compared to the value of what is learnt.

I would definitely recommend KFA to family and friends...
this information is best presented by KFA (Paramedic)...not passed on second hand. Really informative and kept encouraging us to be proactive rather than petrified.
